It is said the Marinduquenos are the most hospitable people in the Philippines and this ceremony will prove it. Commonly performed to welcome a guest who traveled for the first time at the Island. Its also done during birthday, anniversary or any special events that a person is thankful for, praying for good health and more blessing to come.
The "manunubong" or the performer of the tubong usually are the elders of the community wearing baro at saya for the women and barong for the gentlemen. They bring a basket of fresh flower petals and palmy leaves. They will sing and dance accompanied by guitar. The song will sing slowly as they enter the house. The honoree is seated at the center of the room with family member seating at the side of the honoree. As they continue to sing, the rhythm becomes faster and more engaging to dance and the crown will be placed on the honoree's head. The manunubong will shower the honoree with flowers. This symbolizes good luck and more blessing.
As the ceremony ends, a family member will toss the coins from the crowd wishing the host good luck and prosperity. Children and adults rush to get those coins, some times a paper bill if they get lucky.
The ceremony ends when everybody say "Mabuhay". The host will serve sumptuous food and drinks for the guest. This is an event that you will never forget when you visit Marinduque.
Enjoy and have Fun at Marinduque.
